Calgary police lay charges in ‘random’ September stabbing attacks

The victims and suspect were unknown to each other, and CPS believes the attacks were both random in nature

Calgary police have arrested a man for two separate stabbing incidents last month in the downtown — one of which left the victim with life-threatening injuries.

The charges relate to an incident on Sept. 8, when police were called to Century Gardens Park in the 800 block of 8th Street S.W., for a reported stabbing at approximately 9:30 p.m. According to a Calgary Police Service news release Thursday, the suspect fled on foot, while the victim was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.

Police reported that several hours later, at approximately 12:45 a.m. on Sept. 9, the suspect was located and arrested without incident.

Following his arrest, CPS said that detectives were able to link the suspect to another stabbing that occurred at the City Hall CTrain Station on Sept. 3 at approximately 8:45 p.m.

“In this incident, the victim was transported to hospital in critical condition,” CPS stated.

Kendall Joseph Raine, a 22-year-old Calgarian, has been charged with two counts each of aggravated assault and for breaching a probation order. He will next appear in court on Friday, and remains in custody until then.

“We would like to thank our partners at Calgary Transit and the city’s corporate security for their swift work assisting officers to locate the suspect following the second stabbing,” CPS said.

As for the victims, police say they both continue to recover from their injuries, but have since been released from hospital.

The victims and suspect were unknown to each other, and CPS believes the attacks were both random in nature.
