A 19-year-old Walmart employee was discovered dead in a mysterious incident reportedly involving a large baking oven.

Police responded to calls of a ‘sudden death’ at a store in Halifax, Nova Scotia, around 9.30pm on Saturday, and found a deceased woman.

Where in the store her body was found as not immediately disclosed.

Multiple sources told Global News that her death was linked to a big baking oven that was turned on at the time.

Walmart Canada has not commented on the oven or details around the death at the store on Mumford Road.

‘We are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family,’ Walmart spokesperson Amanda Moss told CBC News.

‘We extend our sincerest condolences to those who were closest to them.’

Halifax Regional Police Constable Martin Cromwell called the investigation ‘complex’.

‘We just want to encourage the public to be patient with our investigation and be mindful that there is family members and co-workers involved,’ he said on Monday afternoon.

Police would not say if they suspected criminal activity.

The store was closed on Sunday and Monday.

While the woman’s identity has not been released, Maritime Sikh Society Satnam Singh Randhawa said she was a member of that religious community.

‘It’s pretty distressing, you know, young people come here with all kinds of hopes and dreams and they’re working hard and then this is what happens,’ he told CBC News.

The victim’s cause and manner of death are pending.

It is the latest death involving a worker with a corporate chain.

In May 2023, an Arby’s worker’s body was found in a walk-in freezer inside the fast food restaurant in New Iberia, Louisiana. The woman’s death was considered suspicious.

Walmart has made recent business headlines in the US as the discount department stores and hypermarkets chain has shuttered 11 stores so far this year in California, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Ohio and Wisconsin.
