The Coming Out Monologues is coming back.
After a year’s hiatus, The Coming Out Monologues makes a return Oct. 25 to 27 in The Confluence’s Burnswest Theatre.
This year’s celebration of queer storytelling, and queer artists, will feature 20 individuals sharing their journeys. These are stories of resilience, inspiration and self-realization, and the storytellers were chosen from more than 75 people who applied. Presented by Calgary Queer Arts Society and RBC, The Coming Out Monologues is a vibrant call to action for compassion, understanding and solidarity.
Shone Thistle, executive director of Calgary Queer Arts Society, says “Now more than ever, it’s vital to stand with queer voices, to listen, and to act with compassion. The Coming Out Monologues are not just for queer audiences.
“Despite the current political climate, we see the true spirit of Alberta which is a community that is kind, inclusive, understanding and accepting. Alberta is a place where 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, youth, and their families can express, be who they are, and see themselves reflected.”
This year’s participants were tutored for their presentations by Reckless Daughter Creative theatre company. Founder Madeleine Taylor-Gregg says their collaboration enriched the monologues with innovative theatre techniques that added emotional depth, guiding the participants to express their identities and stories more powerfully.
“Partnering with Calgary Queer Arts is about more than just theatre. It’s about creating a platform for people to share their stories, and to find and create community. These monologues are more than performances. They are an opportunity for all of us, queer or ally, to gather, learn and grow. They challenge the status quo, foster connections, and celebrate the diverse spectrum that makes Alberta.”
Zenon, Robert Adam and KP Smith are the musicians who will be featured at the end of the monologues each evening.
There will also be an art exhibition and market in The Confluence’s lower barracks featuring 30 queer artists selected from more than 50 applicants, live DJ sets, and a harpist. This is an opportunity to witness and support the burgeoning queer arts scene in Calgary.
The Confluence is located at 750 9th Ave. S.E. and the performances begin each evening at 6:30.
