Only third wheel in the building.
Steve Martin poked fun at the rumors that his “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars Martin Short and Meryl Streep are dating on Instagram Saturday.
The actor, 79, posted a photo of the trio from a Glamour article, with a giant red X over Martin’s face.
Martin did not add a caption to his post, letting the picture speak for itself.
In the comments section, fans speculated that Martin’s post means Short, 74, and Streep, 75, are indeed dating.
“Are you confirming this relationship?!” wrote podcast host Ryan Bailey.
“did he just hard launch the relationship,” another fan asked.
“If Ms Streep and Martin Short are an item and this is the announcement I will be over the moon,” someone else said.
A fourth fan wrote, “While Meryl and Martin claim they’re just friends, Steve rats them out.”
Three days before Martin shared his post, Short and Streep enjoyed a dinner date together in Santa Monica, Calif.
The pair were all smiles arriving at celeb hotspot Giorgio Baldi. Streep walked close to Short wearing a white and blue shirt and navy blue pants, while the comedian had on a gray suit.
They later drove off together Streep’s white sedan.
Short and Streep, whose “Only Murders” characters struck up a romance during the Hulu show’s third season, first sparked dating rumors in real life after getting cozy at the 2024 Golden Globes in January.
At the time, Short’s rep shut down the rumors. He told E News, “They are just very good friends. Nothing more.”
Short himself insisted that he and the “Mamma Mia!” actress were merely “friends” during an August interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
However, the rumors were reignited when the duo held hands at the “Only Murders” Season 4 premiere in Los Angeles on Aug. 23
Short then gushed over working with Streep in an interview with Extra a few days later.
“It’s been a friendship that always grows,” he said. “If you work with someone and love that person.”
Short is a widower, having been married to Canadian actress Nancy Dolman – with whom he had three kids, Katherine, 40, Oliver, 37, and Henry, 34 – from 1980 until her death from cancer in 2010.
Streep, meanwhile, was married to Don Gummer, with whom she has four children. Last year, news broke that Streep and Gummer, 77, had been quietly “separated for more than six years.”
