Colin the Caterpillar has been the go-to celebration cake for the last 34 years, first hitting the shelves in M&S in 1990.
Over the years, the high street retailer has sold slight variations of the cake, adding seasonal toppings, and introducing a female version known as Connie.
In all that time, the base of the cake has remained the same – a chocolate sponge, filled with chocolate buttercream, and coated in a milk chocolate shell.
But for the very first time, M&S is making a major change to the inside of Colin and switching up the colour of the chocolate buttercream.
For Halloween 2024 the supermarket is introducing its ‘creepiest and best’ Caterpillar to ever exist. Known as Spine-tingling surprise Colin, this year’s seasonal cake features red buttercream to make the cake look ‘extra spooky’.
His face is also changing, to look more like a skeleton, and the sugar-coated chocolate beans on top are replaced with white chocolate bones.
While the cake might look rather different, it will still taste the same as the treat you know and love.
And the large Colin isn’t the only cake getting a makeover, as the Mini Colin the Caterpillars will also be filled with the red buttercream for Halloween.
M&S Mini Skeleton Colin the Caterpillar Rolls are priced at £3.75 for a pack of five, while the limited-edition full-size cake is £12.
If you’re not a fan of the spooky treats, don’t panic too much as regular versions of Colin are also still available. And the retailer has also unveiled its Christmas version of the cake too, which will be £15.
M&S Sleigh Ride Colin the Caterpillar Cake features regular chocolate buttercream, but it’s also got a few fun extras. The cake is decorated with festive chocolate sweets, including Santa’s hat and a present box, and Colin sits inside a chocolate sleigh. As such, the supermarket claims it’s their ‘most chocolatey’ Colin ever.
For Christmas, M&S also recently caused a stir with their viral Chocolate Shop Advent Calendar.
Metro recently gave the product a try and proclaimed it the ‘best’ chocolate advent calendar for Christmas 2024.
It’s £12, but there’s a reason it’s proving so popular… (spoilers ahead).
If the big bag of chocolate buttons behind door number 25 wasn’t enough reason to buy , then I raise you the variety of chocolate that’s hidden inside.
Four different treats wait for you behind each door, including Marks & Spencer’s popular Mini Whips, filled with fluffy marshmallow.
You’ll also find caramel-filled Chocolate Buttons, Blond Fudge Bites, and Peanut Butter and Caramel Chunkies, as you open each day.
And the best part is, you never know what you’re going to get, unlike say, a calendar, where each sweet is a piece of Dairy Milk. This is something a little bit different, and there will be a genuine surprise each morning.
But what’s the verdict on the chocolate itself? Well, the Whips are delightful as always, and the fudge bites are wondrously sweet, but it’s the Chunkies that are the star of the show here.
The perfect combination of salty, sweet, chewy and a little crunchy, these little chocolate morsels are heavenly — the Metro lifestyle team agreed they were more than worth buying the advent calendar for (although you could just buy an entire bag of them for £2.75 if you’d prefer).
Did I mention that on the days when you get the caramel buttons behind your door, you don’t just get one, but two?! No scrimping on the sweet stuff here. M&S also proved popular in Metro’s recent croissant taste test, with the supermarket’s bakery croissant scoring an impressive 5/5.
