Liam Payne was reportedly struggling with his mental health in the moments before he died Wednesday.
Several eyewitnesses told TMZ that the former One Direction member had been “acting erratic” in the lobby of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Argentina, where he had been staying as a guest.
He reportedly smashed his laptop and had to be carried back to his room due to his behavior.
Local news outlet La Nacion reported Wednesday that police were informed about “an aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol” at the hotel.
At around 5 p.m. local time, Payne reportedly fell to his death from his room’s balcony, which was on the third floor. It’s unclear whether the incident was intentional or accidental. He was 31 years old.
Page Six has reached out to reps for comment but did not immediately hear back.
Photos obtained by TMZ showed the “Night Changes” singer lying on the ground outside the hotel. Police and first responders were on the scene.
Despite claims Payne was behaving unusually, he posted a series of videos on Snapchat Wednesday, in which he appeared well and even said he was “having a lovely day” in Argentina in one of them.
The “What Makes You Beautiful” singer appears to have been in the South American country to support one of his fellow former One Direction members Niall Horan, who recently had a show there.
Payne was in Argentina with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. However, he had been recently preparing for a legal battle with his ex Maya Henry, according to the Daily Mail.
Earlier this week, the outlet reported that the model’s lawyers had sent Payne a cease-and-desist letter to stop contacting her.
“Ever since we broke up he messages me, will blow up my phone, not only from his phone, it’s always from different phone numbers too, so I never know where it’s gonna come from,” she claimed in a recent TikTok.
Henry, 23, also recently claimed that she had an abortion when she and Payne were together. The former couple dated from 2018 to 2022.
Payne also shared a 7-year-old son, Bear, with ex Cheryl Cole, whom he dated from 2016 to 2018.
He met the pop star, 41, while on “The X Factor,” the UK-based singing competition show which launched his career with One Direction.
