Donald Trump aired his views on immigration and other issues Wednesday night at a Univision town hall in Miami — and (unlike his opponent) refused to pander.
His approach looks to be working with Hispanic voters.
“We want workers and we want them to come in, but they have to come in legally,” the ex-prez said.“They have to love our country. They have to love you, love our people. The problem with this administration is they’ve totally lost control.”
Trump, in short, doesn’t buy the persistent claim that all Latino voters want unlimited illegal immigration, or at least refuses to equivocate on one of his central issues.
But he does recognize that appeals to patriotism work well with Hispanics.
His assessment of the case is almost 100% correct, by the way.
There should be zero illegal immigration.
And immigrants who come here legally do need to “love our country,” i.e., be willing to abide by its laws and social norms and assimilate into its culture.
But it’s not quite true that the current administration has “lost control” over the border and migrant inflows.
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris deliberately surrendered control starting on Day 1 in office, when they dismantled the Trump-era policies restraining illegals, to the raucous applause of the progressive media.
The result?
Millions of migrants free to roam the country, and no way of getting an accurate count of the total number who managed to sneak in.
Social decay and crime in tiny border towns and big cities alike.
And no end in sight to the problem, as long as Democrats keep the White House.
Poll data suggest that Trump’s approach is working.
In the latest Siena survey, for example, his support stands at 37% among Latino likely voters, far behind Harris’ 56% — but Latino voters went for Biden by 62% in 2020, so they’re trending away from Democrats.
And with male Latinos, Trump’s within spitting distance, with 45% support to Harris’ 48%.
Harris’ open border BS isn’t proving the political panacea the left dreamed of. Trump’s dead right to stand his ground.
It’s the only hope we have of ending the catastrophe.
