Eau Claire Distillery wins prestigious Canadian whisky award at San Francisco World Spirits Competition

The prize-winning whisky, which debuted in 2020, is described as smooth and approachable, with a brown sugar and buttery vanilla finish. Eau Claire calls the whisky “exceptionally Canadian,” paying homage to the “vast swaths of wilderness across Canada.”

“This really is the ‘David and Goliath’ story of the whisky world,” said David Farran, founder and president of Eau Claire Distillery, in a news release.

“We’re a small distillery with a deep-rooted commitment to craftsmanship and quality, competing on the global stage against some of the biggest names in the industry. Winning ‘Best in Class’ feels like we’ve just toppled a giant, and it’s a testament to the passion and precision of our team. We’re so proud of what we’ve achieved, and this award solidifies our place in the world of exceptional whisky.”

Originating in 2000, the San Francisco competition is known for strict judging by industry experts. It is a highly respected and influential spirits competition, and the oldest and largest of its kind.

Winning an award at the annual competition provides distilleries with global recognition, establishing a legacy for the award-winning spirit.

Eau Claire Distillery, Alberta’s first craft distillery, has an unwavering commitment to farm-to-glass production, “where tradition and innovation meet to create spirits that reflect the soul of the land,” according to its website.

The distillery prides itself on its connection to Alberta, farming barley using Percheron draft horses and antique farming equipment from the 1920’s, saying “it keeps us connected with the terroir of the land and is an investment in preserving our heritage.”

Eau Claire Distillery’s Batch No. 7 Single Malt Whisky is also an award winner, taking home a gold medal at the same competition.
