While Calgary-born singer-songwriters Tegan and Sara Quin have dabbled in various mediums over the years, it’s safe to say the true-crime documentary has not been one of them. That is until now.

The musicians, TV producers, best-selling memoirists, children’s book writers and activists are at the centre of the documentary Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara, which premieres Oct. 18 on Disney+,

Directed by Erin Lee Carr, who was at the helm for I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth vs. Michelle Carter and Netflix’s Britney Vs. Spears, Fanatical tells the stranger-than-fiction tale of stolen identity and the perils of fame. In 2011, Tegan’s personal files were hacked and the duo were plunged into a catfish scheme that targeted their fans and community. Dubbed Fegan (fake Tegan),  this impersonator took on Tegan’s identity and had some fans believing they had formed an online relationship with the singer. The film, which was made with the Quins’ cooperation, follows Carr as she attempts to track down and confront “Fegan.”

The film screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, after which Tegan wrote on the group’s social media accounts: “It felt surreal to finally be in a theatre with hundreds of people watching the movie. And tense. One friend said after ‘that was so uncomfortable and tense my body is sore from stress.’”

Fantatical: The Cathfishing of Tegan and Sara will stream on Disney+ starting Oct. 18.
