Sports Briefs: Huskies women’s soccer clinches playoff spot

A goal by Alyssa D’Agnone, in injury time Saturday, has secured the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s soccer team a berth in the Canada West postseason, but dashed the playoff hopes of the host Regina Cougars, with a final score of 1-1.

Regina scored in the ninth minute and looked poised to keep their playoff dreams alive until the final minutes of the game, when Laura Steacy connected on a long pass to D’Agnone, who beat three defenders and Regina goalkeeper Kareena Anderson to score her ninth goal of the season.

The previous day, Saskatchewan defeated the visiting Cougars 2-1 with Steacy and Amou Madol scoring their first goals of the season.

Saskatchewan sits third in the Canada West Prairie Conference with a 6-2-4 record and two games to go in the regular season.

HUSKIES HOCKEY

The Huskies men’s team improved to 4-0 on the weekend, posting back-to-back victories over the host Calgary Dinos.

On Saturday, Ben Tkachuk, Dawson Holt, Josh Pillar and Chantz Petruic scored in a 4-1 victory, with goalie Jordan Kooy making 23 saves on 24 shots.

In Friday’s meeting, Raphael Pelletier and Vince Loschiavo scored in a game that ended in a 3-2 shootout victory for the Dogs, as Roddy Ross stopped 38 of 40 shots in net during regulation and another seven shots during the shootout. Ethan Regnier scored the lone goal in the shootout as the game-winner.

Meanwhile, the women’s team slid to 0-4 after a pair of losses to visiting Calgary.

Kaylee Hill had the lone goal for Saskatchewan in Saturday’s  3-1 loss that saw Colby Wilson stop 22 of 24 shots.

The night before, the Huskies also managed a single goal, this time time from Kendra Zuchotzki, in a 4-1 loss that saw the Dinos score two empty netters in the final minutes of the game. Clara Juca stopped 24 of 26 shots in net for Saskatchewan.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Huskies team was in Calgary on Saturday to take part in the Stewart Cup, with the team finishing fourth overall.

In the women’s race, Kaitlyn Harrison had the the best result for the Huskies, finishing fourth with a time of 27:20.9, while Quincy Fast‘s ninth-place finish with a time of 24:03.2 was the top Saskatchewan men’s result.

The Huskies will next be in action when athletes compete in the Canada West finals on Oct. 28 in Kelowna.

Blades win against Chiefs, Warriors

A pair of weekend victories at home have placed the Saskatoon Blades atop the Western Hockey League Eastern Conference standings with a 6-1-1-0 record.

On Saturday, Evan Gardner made 20 saves to lead the Blades to a 2-0 shutout victory against the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Following scoreless first and second periods, Saskatoon’s Rowan Calvert broke the stalemate 47 seconds into the third and was followed by an empty net goal from Ben Riche in the final two minutes.

The night before, Saskatoon picked up a 2-1 win against the Spokane Chiefs.

Spokane scored early in the second period to take a 1-0 lead at 3:43, but Ben Saunderson tied it up for the Blades 12 minutes later, while teammate Tanner Molendyk scored what would be the game winner 10:35 into the third.

In that game, Gardner stopped 20 of 21 shots.

High school cross country season wraps up

The Carlton Trail Ski Club near Humboldt played host to the high school provincial cross country championships on Saturday.

In the intermediate boys’ division, Bedford Road’s Ryder Germain captured gold with a time of 11:10, while Luseland’s Lily Holman did the same in the intermediate girls’ race with a time of 11:55.

The junior division saw St. Joseph’s William Sawchuk take first place on the boys’ side with a time of 14:41 and Hannah Gates of Regina’s Sheldon Williams win the girls’ race with a time of 15:47.

Meanwhile, the senior titles went to Regina Campbell’s Alec Teicher in the boys’ race with a time of 13:44 and Lumsden’s Jenna Conrad finished with a time of 15:45 for first in the girls’ race.
