A man accused of killing two teenage girls while on a hike is set to face trial this week.
Richard Allen, of Delphi, Indiana, was arrested years after Liberty (Libby) German and Abigail Williams, 13, were found dead on a hiking trail.
52-year-old Allen is married and worked at the local CVS drugstore in town where Libby and Abigail lived.
Allen has pleaded not guilty to the murder of the two girls, who initially went missing after going for a hike on February 13, 2017.
The pair had been posting pictures on Snapchat up until they went missing.
Their bodies were found the next day in a wooded area nearly a mile away from the trail.
A warrant which was filed by an FBI agent in 2017 who was searching someone’s home for evidence related to the girls’ murder revealed the two teens had lost ‘a lot of blood’ at the hands of their killer.
It added: ‘Because of the nature of the victims’ wounds, it is nearly certain the perpetrator of the crime would have gotten blood on his person/clothing.’
An affidavit revealed that a bullet found close to the bodies of Libby and Abigail matched ones from a gun owned by Allen.
Allen and his wife were the only ones with access to the gun, they admitted.
The county prosecutor, Nick McLeland, said that Allen also ‘confessed five or six times’ to the murders while behind bars for the last two years.
Police were able to get small bits of information in the lead up to Allen’s arrest by analyzing photos, videos, and audio recordings found on Libby German’s phone.
Investigators initially believed the two girls had planned to meet a man on a day they had off from school.
An early person of interest was Ron Logan, the owner of the land the girls’ bodies were originally discovered on.
According to court documents, Logan’s voice and build matched the evidence that had been collected from their phones. Logan also lied about his alibi on the day of their disappearance.
However, a search of Logan’s property revealed no evidence he had anything to do with the murders.
They also investigated Kegan Kline, a accused sex offender that ran a catfish social media account that may have been the last person to contact Libby German. Neither person of interest lead to any arrests or charges.
Allen’s trial is set to begin today and last for a month.
