Quebec Transport Minister Geneviève Guilbault announced on Friday the government will soon be gauging interest on the international market for involvement in its mega-project to connect Quebec City and Lévis with an additional traffic link.
A call seeking interest in the project will be launched with the goal of signing a contract for the work in 2027, ministry officials told reporters during a technical briefing on Friday.
Premier François Legault cited “economic security” as grounds for an extra link, arguing that Quebec City needed another bridge near Île d’Orléans to ensure the transport of merchandise should the Pierre-Laporte Bridge have to shut down.
On Friday, the transport ministry did not exclude any possibility, including the construction of infrastructure for the project in downtown Quebec City along with reserved lanes for public transit.
