Quebec mulls prioritizing access to family doctors to those in poor health: report

Only those patients deemed “vulnerable” would be assigned to a GP.

Sources close to negotiations between Quebec and the Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens told the broadcaster that such an option has been under consideration for months.

Under the proposal, Quebecers in good health or suffering from minor problems would be referred to a “modified” avenue of access to a family doctor. At the moment, the system of matching patients to doctors includes those in good health as well as those who already have a family doctor.

Only those patients deemed “vulnerable” — persons suffering from cancer, mental illness, cardiovascular disease or diabetes — would be assigned to a family doctor.

Radio-Canada did not obtain details on how such a system would be applied, and the provincial health ministry and Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens did not want to comment on negotiations.
