Nearly 800 families are getting a helping hand in time for the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Since March 2020, nearly 10,000 cheer crates filled with fruits and vegetables, eggs, bread, dairy products, cereal, canned goods, books, personal items, learning materials and activities for families have been delivered during extended school breaks.

The cheer crates are valued at around $100 each.

The Cheer Crate Campaign was created to support Saskatoon Public Schools’ families in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the foundation, the need has grown so much that SPSF was not able to support all requests — and foundation board chair Rylund Hunter said he anticipates the cheer crate needs in February 2025 “will be even greater.”

Ahmad said schools “are the heart of our community and a place where students receive nutrition, education, and emotional support … Because of the response from the community and the need identified within SPS families, Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation hopes to continue delivering Canpotex Cheer Crates so that families have some much-needed extras during extended school breaks.”

Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation is an independent charity that focuses on enhancing learning opportunities for students at local public schools.

Most recently, the foundation has funded full-day everyday kindergarten for 29 classrooms in 25 Saskatoon public schools.
