Ten things to do in Calgary this Thanksgiving long weekend: Oct. 11 to 14

Calgary has a full event schedule for the holiday weekend, offering sporting events, Halloween-themed activities and more.

Those using transit on Monday may need to adjust their plans, as buses, CTrains and On Demand will be operating on Sunday levels of service.


Spark After Dark: Killer Psyche

This 18+ event explores the intersection of psychology, crime and forensic science through hands-on experiences, including an immersive crime scene investigation challenge and a blood and special effects workshop. Guests will also be able to enjoy performances, feature cocktails and the final meals of famous serial killers.

Screamfest

Coco in Concert

The Calgary Philharmonic will be performing the magical score of Pixar’s Coco as the film plays on the big screen. The film follows a young musician as he crosses into the land of the dead looking for answers about his family’s musical history.

Muslim Art Movement

The Western Muslim Initiative presents Muslim Art Movement (MAM XII), with the theme Art of Resistance: The Power of Creative Activism. This is Calgary’s largest Muslim art event, bringing together local and international Muslim artists. Art of Resistance will highlight the role of art in resisting occupation, repressive regimes and human rights violations featuring several Palestinian artists.

Wild After Hours: Tigers

This adults-only event offers an exclusive after-hours viewing of the tigers in the Calgary Zoo’s Exploration Asia exhibit, followed by a four-course meal. There will also be an opportunity to learn about tigers through a presentation of stories, videos and and photos from the animals’ caretakers. No children or infants will be admitted to this 18+ event.

Paranormal Activity film screening

The Confluence hosts film screenings every weekend in the Burnswest Theatre, with Paranormal Activity being screened this weekend ahead of Halloween. This horror film, about a couple trying to catch a supernatural presence on film, is rated R and is not kid-friendly.

Calgary’s collectible toy sale is back this weekend, featuring thousands of vintage and modern collectible toys. The event will be in support of Inn From the Cold, supporting families experiencing a housing crisis. Inn From the Cold will receive a share of the proceeds and have an information booth and fundraising presence at the show.

Cost: $3, cash at the door. Free for ages 16 and under.


Thanksgiving Tea at Heritage Park

Heritage Park is hosting two days of Thanksgiving Tea at the Famous 5 Centre of Canadian Women. Indulge in warm tea and finger foods, including mini sandwiches and Thanksgiving-themed sweet treats. A ticket to Thanksgiving Tea includes complimentary admission to the Historical Village.

Fall Harvest Dinner at the Calgary Zoo

The Calgary Zoo is hosting a full day of Thanksgiving fun on Sunday. Guests are invited to arrive at noon to explore the zoo grounds, with the Safari Lodge cash bar opening at 5 p.m. and dinner beginning at 6 p.m. Enjoy a four-course Thanksgiving dinner, complete with dessert. There are gluten friendly and vegan dinner and dessert options.

Calgary Hitmen vs Prince George Cougars

The Calgary Hitmen face off against the Prince George Cougars in this Thanksgiving match-up. With schools closed on Monday, this afternoon game is a great way to get the family out of the house ahead of Thanksgiving dinner, or to be used in lieu of the traditional dinner gathering.
