Transport minister has lost credibility on issue of highway safety, Quebec Liberals charge

The accusations come after the SAAQ said it is open to the idea of Quebec applying administrative (non-criminal) sanctions against drivers who were found to have a blood-alcohol reading between .05 and .08.

The opposition Quebec Liberals are saying provincial Transport Minister Geneviève Guilbault is negligent on the issue of drunk driving and has lost the credibility necessary to ensure highway safety.

Apart from Quebec, the only other jurisdiction in Canada not to have adopted the .05 threshold is the Yukon.

Guilbault opposed adding the .05 to proposed legislation, saying she had not read the SAAQ report.

Liberal MNA Monsef Derraji criticized Guilbault for not taking into the consideration the opinions of experts and said the minister had disqualified herself from ensuring the safety of Quebecers on the province’s roads.
