It took two minutes and 42 seconds on Friday for the U of S to net their first goal of the season as Ben Tkachuk scored on route to the Huskies 7-1 victory in front of a hometown crowd.
Saskatchewan’s other single goals in the game came from Cade Hayes, Raphael Pelletier, Dawson Holt and Carter Stebbings, while Chantz Petruic doubled up.
In net, Roddy Ross made 23 of 24 saves for the Dogs and Jackson Fellner made 19 saves on 26 shots for the Cougars.
The following night, the Huskies travelled to Regina where a hat trick by Logan Bairos led the visitors to a 6-2 win.
Trevor Wong, Jarrett Penner and Landon Kosior also scored for Saskatchewan.
Saskatchewan switched players up in goal with Jordan Kooy earning the win, stopping 22 of 24 shots, while Fellner went 14 for 20 in the loss.
The women’s team also had a pair of games against the Cougars on the weekend, but lost in both.
In Saturday’s action at Merlis Belsher Place, Kaitlyn Gilroy had the lone goal of the game, scoring for Regina 14:14 into the third period.
It was the only goal let in by Saskatchewan goaltender Emma Backman on the 17 shots she faced. Across the ice, Natalie Williamson stopped all 23 shots she faced.
The night before, in Regina, the two teams went to overtime to decide a winner in their first game of the Canada West season. Kaylee Dyer scored 3:37 into the extra period to give the Cougars the victory.
Earlier in the game, Kahlen Wisener scored in the second period for the Huskies and Shaylee Scraba netted a goal for the Cougars in the third period.
Colby Wilson made 32 saves on 34 shots while in net for Saskatchewan and Williamson made 24 of 25 saves.
SOCCER
Led by a hat trick from Alyssa D’Agnone, the Huskie women’s team routed the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns 7-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Cheyenne Lehmann also had a pair of goals for Saskatchewan, while Taryn Izsak and Kieran McKercher scored singles.
It was the third shutout of the season for Kalin Roberts as she made four saves as the Huskies.
Saskatchewan also played on Saturday, battling the Calgary Dinos to a 1-1 tie.
The U of S had a 1-0 lead at the 26th minute thanks to a goal from Marie Kilcher, but Isabella Burtini tied it up in the 41st minute for Calgary.
Goalkeepers for both teams — Roberts for the Huskies and Anna Demarbre for the Dinos — had four saves in the game.
The weekend results improve the Huskies record to 5-2-3.
The men’s team also played to a tie on Saturday, going 0-0 against the Pronghorns..
With two games left in the Canada West season, the Huskies team sits sixth in the Prairie Division with a 3-8-1 record. They’ll have to move up to at least fourth place to advance to the playoffs.
Blades suffer first losses of the season
Tyler MacKenzie’s second goal of the game at 3:02 into the extra period on Saturday night was also the overtime winner for the Everett Silvertips as they defeated the host Saskatoon Blades 5-4.
The Blades trailed 4-2 partway through the third period, but goals by Hudson Kibblewhite and Grayden Siepmann tied things up at the end of regulation time.
Evan Gardner stopped 27 of 32 shots in net for the Blades, while Alex Garrett had 18 saves on 22 shots for the Silvertips.
On the road Friday night, Saskatoon’s four-game winning streak came to an end following a 6-3 loss to the host Swift Current Broncos.
In that game, Rowan Calvert scored at 5:37 into the third period for the Blades, tying the game 3-3. However, the Broncos scored three-straight goals in the time remaining, including a pair from Ty Coupland to give him a hat trick on the night, to claim the victory.
Gardner stopped 25 of 30 shots, while his Swift Current counterpart Reid Dyck stopped 29 of 32.
The losses drop the Blades to a 4-1-1-0 record. They’ll return to action on Oct. 11.
High school golf provincials
The Northern Meadows Golf Club played host to the Saskatchewan high school provincial golf championships Sept. 27 and 28 in a two-day final.
In male results, Marion Graham’s Ryan Mosher earned a score of 71 on the first day and followed it up with a 73 in the second round to tally a total of 144 and claim the provincial title.
Stobart’s Dante Gamble came in second with a 146, while Milestone’s Wyatt Frei finished third with a 149.
On the female side, Regina Campbell’s Tayla Perry scored a 76 and 78, respectively, to claim gold with a score of 154.
Chloe Wills of Kyle took silver with a 156 and Ada Dillon of Sakaskohc earned bronze with a 166.
Crusaders remain undefeated
It was a showdown for first place in 6A city high school football on Friday night and it ended with the Holy Cross Crusaders edging the St. Joseph Guardians to a 29-28 victory to remain undefeated, while dropping their opponents to a 4-1 record.
In other results, Bedford Road won 30-26 over Mount Royal, Tommy Douglas defeated Walter Murray 21-18, Aden Bowman claimed a 20-10 win over North Battleford, Evan Hardy shut out E.D. Feehan 60-0, Bishop Mahoney won 42-1 against Marion Graham and Bethlehem earned a 12-6 victory against Centennial.
