Arsonists target Verdun convenience store

The incident occurred at 1:15 a.m. on Verdun and Argyle Sts.

Rapid intervention by first responders limited an attempt early Monday to burn down a convenience store in the borough of Verdun.

The incident occurred at 1:15 a.m. on Verdun and Argyle Sts. Police received a call reporting that someone appeared to be “setting fire” to the store.

Officers put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, said Montreal police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils, adding that it seemed someone had broken the front door window before setting the fire and fleeing.

While no traces of a firebomb were found, flammable residue was detected at the scene.

Damage to the store was minor and there were no injuries reported. Investigators will check local security cameras to see if they can establish how the incident occurred.

No arrests had been made by Monday morning and the case is being handled by the arson squad.
