Vikings safety Harrison Smith made it personal.
The former first-round pick hit Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ signature belt celebration after a crucial third-down sack in Gang Green’s 23-17 loss to Minnesota at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Sunday.
With three minutes left in the first half, and the Jets down 17-0, Smith had a clear path to Rodgers and sacked him from behind.
“An old friend gets him!” Rich Eisen said on the NFL Network broadcast, referring to the 35-year-old defensive back.
Rodgers was sacked three times and hit him nine times against the Vikings.
The Super Bowl champ was slow to get up and limped off the field after a third-quarter sack — when his foot got entangled in a pile-up — but he did not miss any time.
Rodgers, who will turn 41 in December, told reporters he has a low ankle sprain.
It’s unclear whether he suffered the injury in Sunday’s game, or was dealing with it beforehand.
Rodgers also joked that his body was making a lot of “noises” in the game.
Rodgers previously discussed his famous belt celebration — he pretends to strap on a WWE-style belt in games, and explained that it’s bad luck for others to do it.
“It just goes to the now-famous adage: don’t do the belt. Nobody who’s ever done the belt has really had a whole lot of success after doing that,” Rodgers said during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” in December 2022.
“So that’s just the way it goes. I didn’t make up the rules, people have put together compilations of it.”
The Jets nearly made a comeback in the fourth quarter, but they struggled to run the ball against the Vikings.
Rodgers finished 29 of 54 for 244 yards and two touchdowns.
He was picked off three times, including one on New York’s final play of the game and one pick-six.
The Jets fell to 2-3 with the loss.
They host the Bills on “Monday Night Football” in Week 6.
The Vikings improved to 5-0, and have a bye in Week 6, before facing the Lions in Minnesota on Oct. 20.
