More Calgary businesses selling uninspected meat, AHS finds

Unsanitary conditions also cited by Alberta Health Services at two restaurants

The three establishments include Bangla Bazar-Butcher Shop, Bombay Meat Masala & Samosa Factory and Glassy Junction/Bikaner Sweethouse & Restaurant.

The first business, Bangla Bazar-Butcher Shop, located in the northeast community of Castleridge, was found to have sold uninspected meat, left the meat uncovered on the floor of the walk-in cooler with blood stains on the walls, placed cleaning cloths on food surfaces and maintained poor sanitization of food surfaces.

Glassy Junction/Bikaner Sweethouse and Restaurant at Skyview Ranch also sold uninspected meat.

The restaurant also had a “significant” mouse infestation.

An AHS inspection found mouse droppings in the back of the kitchen under the equipment and food storage shelves, under the ladder leading upstairs, on top of dry food storage containers, on the floor in a storage room, in boxes containing dishes and utensils on the second floor, and in the cupboards of the bar.

Pest control reports also indicated multiple mice captures in the days and weeks ahead of the inspection.

In addition, bathrooms were devoid of paper towels and a sanitizer for food surfaces wasn’t prepared. The inspection also found five buckets of sauce stored on the counter with no temperature control. The sauce had a temperature of 24 C, and staff said that it had cooked it the previous night around 10 p.m. before being left on the counter overnight to cool.

Food was stored directly on the floor in the walk-in cooler and was left uncovered in the dry storage area and a storage room on the second floor. Knives were kept between the two-compartment sink and the wall. The second-floor storage room was cluttered and difficult to clean. The ceiling air vents in the kitchen were veiled in dust. The mechanical ventilation canopy located above the cook line had a build-up of grease and dust on the baffles and the hood.

Food equipment and utensils were found to be dirty and were filled with food debris, grime, grease, and dirt, according to an inspection report. This were also found in the walk-in cooler, shelving located at the back of the kitchen storing dry foods, the taps and basin of the hand washing sink in the kitchen, the surfaces of the two-compartment sink, the paper towel dispensers, the liquid hand soap dispensers, the food contact counters, the exterior of bulk food containers, the cupboards under the bar sink and counters, the knives in storage, floors, walls and ceiling. A covering made of paper towel and tape was observed on the door handle near the preparation cooler and the shelf directly below the microwave in the kitchen.

The last establishment, Bombay Meat Masala and Samosa Factory, located in the northeast community of Falconridge, was also found to have been selling uninspected meat.

All three businesses have been told to close until they can prove they have stopped selling uninspected meat and have thoroughly sanitized the place to the satisfaction of the AHS inspector.
