RVS schools experience phone, internet outages after cable near Calgary was cut

There is no timeline for when the issue can be resolves, a statement from the school board reads, and classes will continue for now without internet access

Schools in the Rocky View District are experiencing phone and internet outage issues after a fiber optic cable was cut near Calgary.

The issue occurred Wednesday morning, Jennifer Thompson, RSV spokesperson, said in an emailed statement and there is currently no timeline for when it might be resolved.

Although RVS schools have no Internet, teaching and learning is continuing in all schools. Our schools remain open and classes will continue,” Thompson added.

School staff will record student attendance on paper and will be unable to notify families of any late arrivals or absences until the outage is resolved, the statement added.

“For non-urgent messages we ask you to hold those emails until the system is restored. Updates will be provided on the pop-up alert window of school and division websites as well as through RVS social media,” the statement reads.

The telecommunications provider is currently working to resolve the issue, the statement added.

Schools in the district are serviced by Alberta SuperNet broadband network, operated by Bell Canada.
