Throwback Thursday 1953 housing boom

From the StarPhoenix archives, Oct. 1, 1953:

Saskatoon’s record 1953 building boom is near the $11,000,000 mark and W.E. Graham, city planner and senior building inspector, predicted today that the year-end construction valuation would be between $12,000,000 and $14,000,000. Addition of the $3,000,000-odd building program being carried out this year at the university campus, would bring Saskatoon’s total building valuation for 1953 up to about $15,000,000 to $17,000,000, he said.

Nearly 1,850,000 has been spent in building new warehouses and public garages, over $1,000,000 for schools and $1,132,000 for alterations to 100 business premises.

September was the sixth consecutive month during which new permits were issued for construction totalling more than $1,000,000. June was the peak month when permits were issued for nearly $3,000,000 worth of new construction. The September record was 201 permits for building valued at $1,051,000.
