What to make of the Mets’ rainout fiasco and crazy new playoffs task

There’s something particularly galling about a bad outcome that everyone can see coming from 100 miles away.

When someone drives into a hurricane, you feel a little bit less bad upon hearing their car got wrecked. And when Major League Baseball ignores a hurricane forecast, well … you’re left to assume they figured the inevitable outcome of that was the best option at hand.

To the surprise of absolutely nobody and the annoyance of absolutely everybody, both Wednesday and Thursday’s games between the Braves and Mets were postponed due to Hurricane Helene and rescheduled to a doubleheader on Monday.

That means the Mets, assuming they can get out of Atlanta, will have two days off before playing a three-game weekend set in Milwaukee, where maybe they can avoid a dramatic conclusion to their season by clinching a playoff spot before they face the Braves again.
