Monica Zurowski named new editor-in-chief of Postmedia Calgary

‘It’s an exciting time to be sharing Calgary’s stories,” she said. “As a city, we are facing some challenges, but we also know that Calgary is a pretty special place”

Postmedia Calgary appointed a new editor-in-chief Thursday, naming Monica Zurowski to the newsroom’s top post.

Zurowski has taken on a variety of editor and reporting roles at Postmedia Calgary (Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun) since starting at the Herald as a summer student in 1986.

“The changes we’ve seen in this city and in the field of journalism over these past three-plus decades are tremendous,” Zurowski said.

“There are more people than ever before engaging with Postmedia Calgary content, through our websites, our apps, newsletters, videos, newspapers and more. It’s an exciting time to be sharing Calgary’s stories.”

Those local stories are more important than ever, said Zurowski, who is the first woman to become the Herald’s editor-in-chief in its 141-year history.

“As a city, we are facing some challenges, but we also know that Calgary is a pretty special place,” she said. “There’s a bold character and spirit to Calgary. Our city’s economic and cultural identity is expanding. It’s a time of evolution.

Zurowski, originally from Saskatchewan, is a University of Regina alumna and has sat on SAIT’s journalism program advisory board in the past.

Zurowski replaces Lorne Motley, who is becoming vice-president of news, large markets. Postmedia’s news brands in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal fall under this title.

Motley has held a variety of leadership positions at the Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun since 1986. Most recently, he oversaw Postmedia’s western Canadian news brands as vice-president editorial, west.
