Riley Keough believes her late mother, Lisa Marie Presley, “died of a broken heart.”
The actress spoke about the 54-year-old’s January 2023 passing in a People cover story published Wednesday, linking Presley’s death to Benjamin Keough’s suicide three years prior.
“My mom tried her best to find strength for me and my younger sisters, [Finley and Harper], after Ben died, but we knew how much pain she was in,” the “Daisy Jones and the Six” alum, 35, explained.
“My mom physically died from the after effects of her surgery, but we all knew she died of a broken heart,” Riley continued.
Benjamin was 20 years old when he died in July 2020.
Prior to her own passing, Presley predicted in a moving essay that she would never “get over” the loss of her child.
The tragedy is a part of the late singer’s upcoming memoir, “From Here to the Great Unknown,” which Riley helped finish.
Benjamin’s death “was incredibly difficult to write about, as [her] mom’s descent into addiction,” the Golden Globe nominee said on Wednesday.
Riley noted that Presley’s passing was also hard to put on the page — but she hopes the vulnerability will help readers find “human connection” when the book comes out next month.
“I hope that in an extraordinary circumstance people relate to a very human experience of love, heartbreak, loss, addiction and family,” the “Under the Bridge” star added.
“[My mom] wanted to write a book in the hopes that someone could read her story and relate to her, to know that they’re not alone in the world.”
Keough has been vocal about her own grief in the wake of both her brother and mom’s deaths.
“I did feel like there was a choice in front of me to give up and let this event take me out or have the courage to work through it,” she revealed to Vanity Fair last year. “I started trying to move through it and not let it take me out.”
The Emmy nominee, who shares 2-year-old daughter Tupelo with husband Ben Smith-Petersen, posted an Instagram tribute to both of her family members in July 2023.
“Missing you both,” she captioned a throwback photo on her Story.
