Quebec engineer Suze Youance named to Canadian Senate

Born in Haiti, she has been heavily involved in the community, the PMO says.

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Wednesday the appointment of Haitian-born Quebecer Suze Youance as an independent senator.

She also hosted two shows on sustainable development and engineering, broadcast until 2023 on TV channel Savoir Média.

Her biographical note indicates that she is very involved in the community, being among other things chair of the board of directors of the Bureau de la communauté haïtienne de Montréal. She is also a member of the board of directors of the Société d’habitation et de développement de Montréal.

Youance is also involved in the community, being a member of the board of directors of the organization Mains utiles, which offers assistance to Haitian women in the city.

The new senator received the Casimir Gzowski Gold Medal from the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and the Mathieu Da Costa Award from the Black Coalition of Quebec in recognition of her contributions.

Youance was recommended by the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments, as were the 87 other independent Senate appointments sought by Trudeau.

The prime minister said he believes that “her experience will make her a strong voice for Quebec and for people across the country.”
