Fire destroys car on M62 causing hour-long delays

Drivers have been caught in hour-long queues on the M62 in West Yorkshire after a car went up in flames on the motorway.

The road and rail networks have felt the brunt of the recent heavy rain and flooding yesterday which delayed trains and closed carriageways – some of which remain closed for a second day.

Now motorists face more misery – this time in West Yorkshire on the M62 where the carriageway has closed westbound between J27 and J26 due to the fire and recovery.

Footage shows the charred wreckage in the middle of the road as traffic tries to squeeze past. The area has delays of up to an hour heading westbound.

The A421 in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire is still closed due to flooding blocking the road in both directions, and this is having a knock-on effect on the A5.

The Prime Minister delivered his speech at the Labour Party conference today, vowing to bring ‘our railways back into public ownership’ as he spoke to the crowds in Liverpool.

The government has already rushed The Railway Services Bill through the House of Commons.

It is due to be debated on October 7.

The legislation means the government can take over services from private train firms when their franchises expire.

Transport Secretary Louise Haigh said previously that she would be ‘wasting no time’ in bringing train services under public ownership.

The first operators to be nationalised could be Greater Anglia and West Midlands after their contract terms expired last week.
