Sports briefs: Mixed results for Huskies on soccer pitch

With the split results, Saskatchewan is now third place in the Canada West Prairie Division with a 4-1-1 record.

Taryn Iszak and Tia Lecox both had a pair of goals to help propel the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s team to a 6-0 victory over the host Lethbridge Pronghorns in Canada West soccer on Saturday.

Madison Mayert also scored for the Huskies, while the first of the team’s goals was credited to the team as a whole.

Goalkeeper Nadia Kalyar made three saves in the victory.

The following day, Saskatchewan was in Calgary for a meeting with the Dinos that ended with a 1-0 defeat.

Calgary’s lone goal came from Isabella DiPalma in the 32nd minute.

With the split results, Saskatchewan is now third place in the Canada West Prairie Division with a 4-1-1 record.

Meanwhile, on the men’s side, the Huskies were home for games against the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday and the UNBC Timberwolves on Sunday.

In the first game, Saskatchewan fell 2-0 as UBC scored twice within two minutes in the second period.

Against the Timberwolves, Daker Tokhirov scored in the first half for the Dogs and Ethan Cabral scored in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as the host team fell 3-2.

The losses drop Saskatchewan to a 2-7 record and sixth place in the Canada West Prairie Division.

HOCKEY

It was another weekend of exhibition games for the Huskies teams.

The men’s team defeated the Minot State Beavers 6-2 on Thursday and blanked the Briercrest Clippers 7-0 on Saturday, while the women’s teams posted victories of 3-2 over the U18 Team Saskatchewan and 4-3 against the Lakeland Rustlers on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Both teams will begin the Canada West season on Oct. 4.

Saskatoon teams win provincial rugby titles

After an undefeated season, the Saskatoon Badgers claimed the Saskatchewan men’s Division 1 provincial title on Sept. 14 with a 34-15 victory against the Regina Rogues.

Earlier in the season, the Badgers club won the Saskatoon Division 1 and Division 2 city championships.

Also on Sept. 14, the North women’s team, a combination of the Saskatoon Kirin and Wild Oats Women clubs, defeated the South team 51-38 to claim the President’s Cup.

Four teams undefeated in high school football

Following last week’s results, only four teams remain undefeated in the high school football standings.

In 6A action, Holy Cross won 41-0 over Centennial, while St. Joseph defeated Walter Murray 52-20 and Bethlehem secured a 15-7 victory over Lloydminster.

Holy Cross and St. Joseph are both 3-0.

Over in the 5A games, Bishop Mahoney won 34-0 over Aden Bowman, Bedford Road defeated E.D. Feehan 39-0, Evan Hardy posted a 57-6 victory over Mount Royal  and Tommy Douglas picked up a 39-2 win against Marion Graham.

The wins by Bedford Road and Evan Hardy give them both with 2-0 record.
