Saskatoon Blades open season with back-to-back wins

Saskatoon Blades open the WHL season, Huskies soccer and hockey teams in action and other local Saskatoon sport results.

A pair of victories over the Swift Current Broncos have the Saskatoon Blades starting the new Western Hockey League season off on a two-game winning streak.

Saskatoon turned in a dominant performance for its home opener on Saturday, defeating the Broncos 9-3.

In the first period, Cooper Williams and William James both scored for the Blades, but the hometown team still found themselves down 3-2 at the intermission.

It didn’t take long for the Blades to get back in the driver’s seat and lead the game, as Ben Riche scored twice, while Tyler Parr and Brayden Klimpke each scored once, to put the Blades up 6-3 after two periods.

Saskatoon continued to increase its lead in the final 20 minutes, with Klimpke adding his second goal of the game and Misha Volotovskii and Colten Worthington each adding one.

In net, Austin Elliott stopped 19 of 22 shots for the Blades; for the Broncos, Reid Dyck stopped 23 of 29 in the first two periods before being replaced in the third period by Joey Rocha, who stopped 10 of 13.

The Blades started their 2024-25 campaign on Friday in Swift Current, pulling out a 4-1 win.

Saskatoon sandwiched the lone Broncos goal with Kohen Lodge scoring in the first period, Volotovskii in the second and Riche and Rowan Calvert scoring in the third. Calvert’s goal was an empty netter.

Elliott picked up his first win of the season stopping 24 of 25 shots, while Dyck made 32 saves on 35 shots.
