14-year-old from Flying Dust First Nation dead after ATV crash

Meadow Lake RCMP continues to investigate along with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, said a police news release issued Saturday night.

A 14-year-old girl from Flying Dust First Nation is dead, and another person is injured following an ATV crash near the community Saturday morning, RCMP say.

At approximately 4:15 a.m., an RCMP officer noticed two people on ATVs without helmets in Meadow Lake, said an RCMP news release issued Saturday night.

“The officer activated their emergency lights in an attempt to stop the ATV but it continued at a high rate of speed on Highway #55 towards Flying Dust First Nation,” said the release. “The officer didn’t pursue, deactivated their emergency equipment and observed the ATV turning south off the highway where it subsequently struck the ditch.”

“The officer immediately responded,” the release continued, and found one of the occupants unresponsive. RCMP say EMS was called and life-saving measures were attempted, but the individual was declared deceased at the scene. She has been identified as a 14-year-old female from Flying Dust First Nation and her family has been notified.

The second “occupant” reported minor injuries and was treated by EMS on scene, the release noted, adding that Meadow Lake RCMP continues to investigate along with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.

Flying Dust First Nation is located about 4.5 kilometres northeast of Meadow Lake.
