Calgary police arrest man for carjacking who’d been released from custody 16 hours earlier

However, police have not recovered the woman’s vehicle

A Calgary woman had her car stolen this month by a man who’d been released from custody less than a day before the incident and was breaking his release conditions, Calgary police said on Thursday as it sought help finding the vehicle.

The incident happened on Sept. 8 when the woman and her son were leaving a KidStrong facility, a physical activity program for children, on Macleod Trail and getting into their car when an unknown man tried to steal the vehicle.

The woman was physically assaulted and sustained minor injuries after a struggle with the man; however, he was successful in stealing the car. Bystanders came to the woman’s aid after her son gathered help, police said. Police were contacted after the incident and started an investigation.

On Sept. 13, four days after the incident and a period in which various CPS members became involved in the search, police were called at about 6:15 p.m. to Bearspaw Dam Road and 85th Street N.W. for reports of an unknown man believed to be “car prowling” the area, police said. Following on information provided by the public, officers arrested the man who’d been identified as the suspect in the carjacking incident.

Police have charged 43-year-old Wayne Aaron Canning, a Calgary resident, for robbery, mischief to property, theft and several breaches of a release order. Canning remains in custody and will appear in court on Sept. 26.

However, police have not recovered the woman’s vehicle. Police say the car is described as a silver 2007 Kia Rio with four doors. Its license plate is CRC 7920.

“The victim and her son were innocently going about their day when they were robbed of their only mode of transportation. These types of brazen crimes will not be tolerated in our city,” Acting Insp. Kurt Jacobs of CPS’ Technical Investigations Section said in a statement.
