Matt Stajan returns to Flames as skills consultant

According to Wednesday’s announcement, the 40-year-old Stajan “will be responsible for working daily with the Flames and AHL Wranglers’ players in honing their individual skill development.”

Stajan skated for parts of 16 seasons at hockey’s highest level, including nine campaigns at the Saddledome. He logged upwards of 1,000 career appearances in a wide variety of roles — from first-line playmaker to down-the-depth-chart glue guy — and was always considered a popular teammate and a positive presence in the locker-room.

“We are constantly searching for ways to improve our club by adding valuable resources and the right people,” said Flames general manager Craig Conroy, one of Stajan’s former teammates and now his boss. “Matt is a great addition providing extensive NHL playing experience, familiarity with our players and organization, and a passion for wanting our group to succeed. Having Matt dedicated solely to each player’s individual skills will enhance their development and thus our team’s success.”

Even in retirement, Stajan has been a regular around the rink. He was an assistant coach with the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen from 2021-23.

The Flames open training camp Thursday at WinSport.
