Miley Cyrus has been hit with a lawsuit over one of her biggest songs, it has been claimed.
The 31-year-old released Flowers, last year, as the lead single from her Endless Summer Vacation album – and it quickly flew to the top of the charts around the world, including in the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany and Japan.
She also took home a Grammy for the track earlier this year, landing the coveted record of the year trophy.
However, the Hannah Montana actress has been accused of copying Bruno Mars’ song, When I Was Your Man, for the song.
Rolling Stone reports that she is being sued for copyright infringement in a new lawsuit, which was filed by filed in LA on Monday by Tempo Music Investments. Her co-writers, Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack, have also been named.
The investment platform claims to share copyright for the 2013 ballad after acquiring it from Philip Lawrence, who co-wrote the song along with Ari Levine, Andrew Wyatt and Bruno – who has not named as a plaintiff in the lawsuit.
They suggested that Flowers shares ‘many musical similarities’ to it.
‘Any fan of Bruno Mars’ When I Was Your Man knows that Miley Cyrus’ Flowers did not achieve all of that success on its own,’ the documents, obtained by the outlet, state.
‘Flowers duplicates numerous melodic, harmonic, and lyrical elements of When I Was Your Man, including the melodic pitch design and sequence of the verse, the connecting bass-line, certain bars of the chorus, certain theatrical music elements, lyric elements, and specific chord progressions.
‘It is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that Flowers would not exist without When I Was Your Man.
‘With Flowers, Cyrus, Hein, and Pollack have created a derivative work of When I Was Your Man without authorization.’
Tempo Music Investments is seeking damages which are yet to be determined, and have demanded that Miley is banned from publicly performing or distributing the song.
Miley and Bruno have not yet spoken publicly over the lawsuit.
The Wrecking Ball musician released Flowers in January, 2023, and it quickly became a smash hit – she was awarded the record of the year award at the Grammys in February.
‘This award is amazing, but I really hope that it doesn’t change anything, because my life was beautiful yesterday,’ she told the star-studded crowd.
‘Not everyone in the world will get a Grammy, but everyone in this world a spectacular. So please don’t think that this is important, even though it’s very important.’
