After officers attempted to de-escalate, a taser was deployed, followed by pepper spray when he continued to be “combative” toward police.
A man has died in police custody early Tuesday morning, prompting an Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) investigation.
Around 12:55 a.m., Calgary police responded to reports of a man causing a disturbance and refusing to leave the Carriage House Hotel and Conference Centre at 9030 Macleod Tr. S.E., in the community of Acadia.
“However, the man was not cooperative. A struggle ensued, resulting in one officer deploying a taser,” police said.
The man continued to be “combative” with officers, resulting in one officer deploying OC spray (pepper spray).
The man was taken into custody and, shortly after, went into medical distress. Despite the efforts of EMS, he was declared deceased at the scene.
No one else was injured in the altercation.
“As is standard practice with a death in custody, the Director of Law Enforcement was notified and has directed ASIRT to investigate,” said police.
Police say further details will not be released as the matter is an active ASIRT investigation.
