The cast of the upcoming Harry Potter TV series has not yet been announced however many are pushing for Cillian Murphy to play an iconic role.
In April last year it was announced that the beloved book and film series was set to be adapted for TV by HBO.
Set to run for seven seasons, with each focusing on a book in J.K. Rowling’s series, details about the show have been left closely under wraps.
However, fans of the franchise are desperate for Peaky Blinders star Cillian, 48, to play the ever-terrifying Lord Voldemort, whom Ralph Fiennes played in the film series.
One Harry Potter fan page on X claimed there were already ‘rumours’ Cillian was being considered for the role, despite there being no official confirmation to date.
This claim however led many others to throw their support behind the Irish actor taking on Harry Potter’s biggest foe.
‘YESSSSSS I can see Cillian Murphy being Tom Riddle / Voldemort for the new Harry Potter TV series, he’d nail it perfectly,’ user Sir_Hellscythe posted on X.
‘Cillian Murphy is hands down the perfect man for an antagonist like Voldemort. Hopefully this rumour is true. Can’t wait until the confirmation,’ xixmixwithfanta commented.
‘Cillian Murphy as Voldemort is actually kind of incredible, I would be so down for this,’ RooonilWaslib added.
Others called the potential casting ‘the perfect fit’ and a ‘game changer’.
The rumours come after HBO released a casting call for the three main stars, with an advert calling for actors to play the lead star along with Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.
The casting call explained the broadcaster was looking for children who will be between the ages of nine and 11 in April 2025 and who are residents of the UK and Ireland.
It also explained that casting would be inclusive to all races, ethnicities and gender identities.
The application asked actors to submit two short self-tapes, including a short poem or story but were told not to submit any from Harry Potter.
The second self-tape asked for ‘a short video telling us a bit about yourself, including your date of birth, height and where you live. In addition, please describe any family member, friend or pet that you are particularly close to. Please use your own accent. One minute maximum’.
The deadline for submission is October 31, with the ad also revealing the series is set to film in the UK in 2025 and 2026.
This week James McAvoy revealed he almost played a young version of Lord Voldemort in the film series.
Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused Podcast, the actor said that he turned down the role of Tom Riddle in the early films because of how much time it would’ve required.
‘It was right at the beginning of my career, I auditioned for it, they wanted to put me and 10 other actors on a retainer so they could hold us and keep us to choose later,’ he said.
‘They offered quite a lot of money; it was like £40,000 pounds or something like that. I wouldn’t be able to do any work for about seven months.’
But after consulting his agent, James was advised to turn it down and instead pursue other roles, a decision he said was ‘part of the making of me’.
