Children’s TV show and absolute fever dream Balamory is making a surprise comeback to CBeebies after nearly 20 years away.

The multi-coloured and wacky BBC show was a hit with preschool kids two decades ago when it made its debut in 2002 before it came to an end in 2005.

Set in the fictional island town of Balamory, a pastel-hued escape, the Scottish series focused on a nursery school and its teacher Miss Hoolie, as well as the community.

Each episode, which had young children absolutely hooked, would see a selection of songs played by different characters.

The BBC has now commissioned Balamory for two new and revamped series on CBeebies, which will air from 2026, meaning families will be able to enjoy the home-grown storytelling about the nursery.

Filming will return to Scotland, but it is unclear whether it will be in the show’s original location of Tobermory, the stunning harbour town on the Isle of Mull, or elsewhere.

Exact details of the reboot will be developed and is set to be inspired by the original family favourite.

However, the broadcaster has said that BBC Children’s and Education are interested in ideas from producers where some of the original characters will be included in the series alongside a host of new faces for preschoolers to get to know.

Kate Morton, Head of Commissioning 0-6 for BBC Children’s and Education said: ‘A whole new generation will discover and enjoy Balamory as we bring families together with this new update for CBeebies.

‘It will be a real treat for parents who grew up with the show to now introduce their little ones to the brightly coloured world getting to know a host of old and new characters together.’

The original series helped to make stars of its cast, including Julie Wilson Nimmo, who played Miss Hoolie, comedian Miles Jupp, who played Archie, and Andrew Agnew who played PC Plum.
