Kate Hudson has revealed her rather masculine middle name during a candid red carpet moment at the Shell world premiere.
Kate, 45, looked incredible on the red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival in Canada. The Almost Famous star wore a beautiful pink silk gown with a diamond necklace and subtle glam makeup.
While at the event, the actress chatted to a reporter at ETalk who asked her about her rather unusual name.
Kate admitted that rather than being given a typically female middle name, her mother opted to name her Garry.
That’s right, her full name is .
While the name may no longer be popular, or traditional for a woman, she revealed there’s an incredibly sweet reason behind the name.
‘I was named after my uncle Garry, my mum, [he was] her favourite uncle,’ she admitted with a smile while chatting to a reporter for ETalk.
Garry (and the name spelt Gary) was once one of the most popular names in the UK and US.
In 1964, the more common spelling ‘Gary’ was the 16th most popular male name in the UK, but in 2013 only 28 babies in the UK were given the name – leading to reports that Garys are becoming extinct.
Mixed reports have suggested that the name could be set for a comeback but the name is currently the 1,619th most popular name in the UK, a significant drop when it was in the top 20.
Kate’s mother is the Oscar-winning actress Goldie Hawn, 78, and her father – from whom she is estranged – is actor and comedian Bill Hudson.
It’s thought that she was born soon after Goldie’s uncle Garry died, which is why she was inspired to give her daughter this sweet but unusual middle name.
Goldie and Bill also have a son named Oliver Rutledge Hudson, 48, and Goldie has another son with Kurt named Wyatt Hawn Russell, 38.
Although Kate still uses her father’s surname, on several occasions Kate has said that her father is the man who raised her, Goldie’s long-term partner Kurt Russell, 73.
On Jurt’s 70th birthday in 2021, Kate shared a gushing post about her ‘Pa’ as she spoke about how important he has been in her life.
‘I often wonder how different our life would have been if he never entered the picture. How different I would be,’ she said in the moving post.
‘He’s an original. One of kind. A powerful, intelligent, talented, loyal family man. He has taught me that we can all exist with immense love through our differences.
‘And his dedication to my mother and their fight for love forever is as admirable as it gets. I love this man so much!’ she said.
Kate isn’t the only celebrity with a rather unusual middle name. Like Kate, James Corden has a middle name that isn’t typically given to his gender. The Gavin & Stacey star’s full name is James Kimberley Corden.
Nicolas Cage’s middle name is also Kim, and Billie Eilish actually uses one of her middle names as her stage name but her full title is Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell.
Will Smith’s middle name is Carroll and Courteney Cox’s middle name is Bass.
