Wildfire evacuation alert ends near Water Valley in M.D. of Bighorn

The northeast section of the Ghost Public Land Use Zone remains closed

The evacuation alert within the M.D. of Bighorn has been rescinded, with a wildfire near Water Valley remaining under control.

Recent mapping of the blaze showed it was estimated to be just shy of 49 hectares in size.

“The fire was scanned (Wednesday) night. A small number of hot spots remain and will be the focus of continuing suppression efforts,” the municipal district said on its website Thursday.

Given continuing firefighting efforts and the currently elevated risk of wildfires, the northeast section of the Ghost Public Land Use Zone is closed and is expected to remain so through the weekend.

Road closures have been lifted, apart from Stud Creek Road/Burnt Timber Road.

“All public lands, OHV trails, and random camping areas within this zone are closed to public access,” the M.D. of Bighorn said.

The news comes as wildfire worries linger in Jasper, which was devastated by flames last week.

The park says the wildfire remains out of control and has grown by about 7,500 hectares, bringing it to about 39,000 hectares.

Crews aided by helicopters have been working to extinguish hot spots around the community and near the water treatment plant.
