Fans of Garbage have been left devastated as the 90s group scrapped the rest of their tour due to lead singer Shirley Manson’s injury.

While they have not specified the nature of the damage, it will reportedly ‘require surgery’ with the 57-year-old singer needing time for rehabilitation.

Garbage – consisting of Shirley, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig – rose to fame with their debut self-titled album in 1995.

Featuring hits like Stupid Girl and Only Happy When It Rains, they shot up the charts and became instant favourites in the 90s rock scene.

Taking to Instagram, Shirley wrote: ‘No one is more crushed about this than I am. You know I would push through if I could.’

Garbage shared a statement on their account which read: ‘It is with great and sincere regret that we announce the cancellation of all our remaining dates for the rest of the year.’

They explained it was ‘due to an injury that Shirley sustained on our recent tour in Europe that will require surgery and rehabilitation to correct’.

She previously had to undergo a hip replacement after she fell off a rotating stage in 2016.

They added: ‘This is not a decision we have taken lightly and we apologise wholeheartedly to our amazing fans and supportive promoters. We look forward to playing for you all again in 2025.

‘Sending so much love as always. Stay kind.’

Fellow musicians took to the comments to wish Shirley the best, including punk star Kathleen Hanna who wrote: ‘I really hope the surgery goes well and people sneak you in some decent food!’

Smashing Pumpkins’ official account sent hearts while frontman Billy Corgan added his own well-wishing emojis.

Even Drag Race star BenDeLaCreme added: ‘Sending all the love and wishes for a speedy and smooth recovery!’

Earlier this year the group, who originally formed in Edinburgh, toured the UK and Shirley confessed she wasn’t sure how long they would keep going.

‘As I get older and older, I realise I don’t know how much time I have left,’ she explained toearlier this year.

‘It’s something that doesn’t cross your mind when you’re 18 years old. But now every show feels really precious to me.’

‘The older I get the more I enjoy life, I understand time is running out on me and it has allowed me to enjoy a sense of urgency, to harness it and put into my work,’ she added to the BBC ahead of TRNSMT Festival.

‘I don’t know how much longer we can go on and do this.

‘I’m the youngest member of the band and I’m turning 58 in a couple of weeks. So we are just enjoying every moment right now.’

Garbage had been due to play in Mexico City at the Festival Hera on August 24 before heading to the US for the two further festivals.

Ohana Fest in Dana Point, CA, and HFStival in Washington, DC, have confirmed alternative artists have now stepped into the slots.

There are currently no further dates scheduled for the band but they promised to return next year, once Shiley is healed.
