Zary golf: Saskatoon tees up 2024 Canadian Amateur men’s golf on two courses

This year’s Canadian Amateur event — held jointly at Riverside and Saskatoon Golf and Country Club — will be the 119th of the national tournament.

Saskatoon is about to tee up the 2024 Canadian Amateur men’s golf championship.

The qualifier is set for Friday at Riverside Country Club with 51 competitors (as of Thursday) vying for eight open spots.

This year’s event — held jointly at Riverside and Saskatoon Golf and Country Club — will be the 119th of the national tournament.

The last time it was held in Saskatoon, a young Nick Taylor won it back in 2007 at Riverside. Taylor has gone on to win four times on the PGA Tour.

Since 2007, the championship has essentially doubled in size, with more than 250 golfers now chasing Canadian Amateur glory.

Each of the host clubs has been granted an exemption. The SGCC spots have been awarded to Reliance Gregg’s Central Am winner Sylvester Tan along with Davis Yuzdepski and Matt Baker.

Riverside exemptions have gone to Marc Sweeney, Darren Gillen, Brad Moser and Connor Scissons.

Among the golfers receiving an exemption after the Saskatchewan Amateur is young junior golfer Aricin Franklin. Also qualifying through the Sask. Am were Luke Cote, Chase Pochylko, Danny Klughart, Alex Swinnerton, Hunter Kutcher, Tommy Danielson,Aiden Walker and Jehremy Ryde.

Friday’s qualifier features some other familiar names in the Saskatchewan amateur golf scene. Among them are Will Blake, Jordan Arndt, Taylor Afseth, Justin Wood, Max Regier, Jock Kriegler, Jesse Gibson,Myles Johnson, Scott Allan and Lee Fairbairn.

The qualifier begins early Friday morning with the first group teeing off at 7 a.m.

SGCC CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

Other winners at the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club’s club championship included Kathy Ziglo (women), Beth Davis (senior women), Sarah Henderson (junior girls), Sylvester Tan (men), Warren Proctor (senior men), Jaden Gregor (junior boys U19), and Kolton Spenst (boys U15).

Ziglo’s win ties Davis at eight wins total in the women’s category. Gerry Street holds the all-time record with 18 wins. Davis now has five senior wins to go with eight women’s titles.

It was a third junior title for Henderson and a second senior club championship for Proctor, whose win came in a playoff versus last year’s senior men’s champion, David Bird.

Four junior boys competed in the men’s division, attempting to earn a spot in the Canadian Am. Lucas Sturgeon (age 14) and Brady Guenther (age 16) were strong contenders, finishing 8th and 9th respectively in the championship flight.

COMING UP NEXT

Along with the Canadian Am, it’s a busy golf stretch in the province.

The Men’s Northern tournament will be played over the August long weekend at the Prince Albert Cooke Municipal Golf Course.

The TS&M Woodlawn FrameTech Classic — featuring both men’s and women’s Golf Sask. Order of Merit competitions — also runs this weekend in Estevan.

The MJT/Sask. OOM Series has an upcoming event Aug. 10 and 11 at Elk Ridge followed by the Junior Lobstick Aug. 12 to 16 at Waskesiu.

The Northwest Amateur is slated for Aug. 10 and 11 at the North Battleford Golf and Country Club, while the Blue Owl Open goes the same weekend at Yorkton’s Deer Park.
