Travelling workers from the U.S. work in Saskatoon in 1953

From the StarPhoenix archives:

“We’ve travelled so much, we’re not satisfied to be in one place too long, and after we are home a week we’re ready to leave again.”

The group of women sitting in the shade of the trailer nodded agreement with the speaker, Mrs. Roy Selzer, who calls Oklahoma home.

“This may look like gypsy life, but it isn’t. We have more storage space in the trailer than in most apartments —— and we don’t have to clean up every time we move in,” another chimed in.

“It gives the children a feeling of being at home, for they are always in their own surroundings and they don’t get homesick,” a mother added, and another woman called out that a trailer house was wonderful for people who were getting older —— no stairs to climb.

A number had spent weekends at Waskesiu, and one family motored to Calgary and Banff for one weekend, just 1,500 miles! Everybody had had a wonderful time at the fair.

“But you haven’t had any summer up here,” one woman from the southern states said, and another commented she was going to sit up some night, just to see if it ever did get dark.

It wouldn’t be long until they were moving on, and one mother said they were leaving the next day for their home in Texas. Another was overheard to say they were pulling out for Spokane, or it might be Indiana, she wasn’t sure.

Throwback Thursday is a weekly StarPhoenix series where we revisit photos from Saskatoon’s past.
