Netflix fans havebeen left shocked after discovering its biggest show ever is coming to an end.

Hitting screens in 2021, Squid Game was released to critical acclaim, going on to become the streaming service’s most-watched show after attracting 1.65 billion viewing hours in a month.

Three years on, it still holds the top spot, failing to be edged out by hits like Stranger Things, Wednesday and Bridgerton.

After a long wait for season 2, Netflix has now confirmed it will be back later this year.

Sharing a minute-long teaser trailer across social media platforms on Thursday, the clip shows people lining up for a race on a track and then setting off.

However as the participants, wearing the show’s now iconic green tracksuit sets, start falling down and screaming, the camera pans up to the infamous masked guards in pink sets and masks.

One wearing black then says: ‘It’s been three years. Do you want to play again?

It is then revealed the second season will be released on December 26, with ‘the final season coming 2025’.

Viewers were ecstatic at the news of the show’s return.

‘SCREAMING LETS GOOOO,’ Zainab commented on Instagram.

‘Finally at last’ Moiz shared.

‘Squid Game is my Olympics,’ Tyler added.

However, many others were shocked after finding out the series would be finished after the third season.

‘Final season what y’all mean,’ user saintly.kts questioned.

‘This show is too damn good for it to end on season 3,’ he added.

‘Anyone else find it weird that this is their most watched show ever and they’re only making three seasons out of it?’ user infamous1 posted on X.

‘OMG Squid Game ending after season 3? 2025 feels SO far away…what am I gonna do with my life when it’s over? Guess I gotta soak up every last episode! Can’t wait to see how it all ends,’ LionRightNow added.

However, others pointed out that most K-drama’s don’t usually extend beyond a season, so getting three seasons of Squid Games was a rarity.

The official synopsis for season 2 explains that ‘three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport.’

‘Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway,’ it continues.

‘But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organisation proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.’

As previously announced, Lee Jung-jae will return to star alongside fellow returning cast members Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo.

The show’s creator, director, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk also posted a letter to fans, writing he was ‘thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story’.

The first season of Squid Game received numerous accolades, including 14 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including for Outstanding Drama Series, making it the first non-English-language work to be nominated in this category.
