Hotels in Montreal, Quebec City to be hit by Aug. 8 strike, union says

A total of 30 hotels employing 3,500 workers are involved in the negotiations.

Hotels in three cities in Quebec will be hit by walk-outs next week as the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN) holds a series of hotel strikes on Aug. 8.

Hotels in Montreal, Quebec City and Sherbrooke will see unionized staff walk out for 24 hours to protest what the union argues is a lack of progress at the negotiating table.

A total of 30 hotels employing 3,500 workers are involved in the negotiations. The staff at roughly half of those hotels have voted in favour of 120 hours of strike action to used at an opportune moment.

The union is seeking a 36 per cent pay hike over four years, as well as increased contributions from the employer into group insurance and an end to the use of employment agencies.

A demonstration involving hundreds of workers then took place on Monday in front of the Château Champlain hotel.
