Simone Biles’ fans roasted her husband, Jonathan Owens, for wearing the Olympian’s gold medal after the US won the gymnastics team final — and rehashed his controversial “catch” remarks once again.
The NFL player, 29, posted a slideshow on Instagram Wednesday that showed him posing alongside and kissing his spouse, 27, as he wore her medal around his neck and held it up.
“Witnessing history every time you step on the mat 😍🔥,” he captioned the post.
“Congrats baby on becoming the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history!!!! Just wow!!!! 8 of them!!!!! So thankful i was there to see it ❤️🤍💙.”
One person wrote in the comments section, “That’s Simone’s gold medal you’re holding, not yours my guy. 😂😂,” receiving more than 4,000 “likes.”
Another perplexed user agreed, “why he holding it like he won it,” while a third added, “give the medal back bby [sic] thats not yours.”
A fourth user joked, “Now you know who is She, right? 👀😂,” referencing when Owens said on the “Pivot” podcast last December that he “didn’t know” of Biles prior to them matching on the Raya dating app.
“I’m like, ‘Lemme see who this is.’ I never really paid attention to gymnastics, so it piqued my curiosity,” he claimed at the time — despite Biles having already garnered a lot of fame due to her past Olympic performances.
The Chicago Bears safety then stuck his foot in his mouth when said in the candid episode that he thought he was “the catch” in their relationship, adding, “I always say that the men are the catch.”
His remarks received tons of backlash — even though Biles came to her husband’s defense at the time and slammed the haters as “disrespectful.”
However, people clearly still will not let Owens — or Biles — move on from the ordeal, as they brought it up again this week despite him attending all of her competitions and being supportive in the stands.
He even had to ask the Bears for permission to attend the Games in Paris since the NFL team is currently preparing for the start of their season.
Some people did feel the need to back the pro football player, though, with one person stating, “Yall are so miserable to keep bringing up his comment of not knowing who she is.
“It is not uncommon for people to not know who other athletes are if you’re not into certain sports. This man loves that girl through and through and the make such a fly couple! Congratulations Simone.”
Biles, for her part, had no issue with Owens holding her gold medal and wrote in the comments, “my whole heart. i love you ❤️❤️❤️❤️.”
The world champion added, “means the world you’re here.”
Rapper Favor Flav, who is at the 2024 Paris Olympics sponsoring the US women’s water polo team, also weighed in, writing, “Everyone luvs a supportive KING 👑 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾.”
Biles and Owens started dating in 2020 and went public with their romance on Instagram that August.
They tied the knot in a courthouse wedding in April 2022 and married again a few weeks later in Mexico during a beachside wedding in front of family and friends.
