Netflix comedy with scene-stealing Hollywood star that you ‘didn’t know existed’

You may not have heard of the Netflix series Unstable, but the underrated comedy has already got a second series.

The newest episodes will be arriving on the streaming platform tomorrow and will continue to feature Hollywood stars, Fred Armisen and Rob Lowe.

Those who have been there since it began in March 2023 are encouraging others to give the unique workplace comedy, which is executively produced by the Parks and Recreation actor and his son John Lowe, a chance.

Art reflects real life in Unstable with Rob and John playing father and son in the TV show.

Ellis (Rob) is an admired and successful high-tech bio-research facility founder who has tendencies to be a little eccentric and narcissistic-adjacent.

When his wife dies, estranged son Jackson (John), who is a little more socially awkward and timid, joins the company Dragon Industries to prevent him from unravelling further as he deals with grief. While live-in therapist Leslie (Fred) also does his best work to stop that from happening as well.

Growing up with a superstar father, and trying to make his own way in the world means that John has a lot to be inspired by when playing the character.

‘Well, it’s a bit too meta at times, I will say that. There’s been moments where I’ve had to remind myself that it’s just a show,’ he told Screen Rant.

The cast also includes Sian Clifford (Fleabag) as Anna – the CFO of Dragon, who encourages Jackson to help his father for the sake of the business’s reputation, and Tom Allen, who plays board member TJ. Joining the ensemble in the second outing are Lamorne Morris (New Girl) as fellow biotech company CEO Peter and Iris Apatow (This is 40) as Georgia – Anne’s stepdaughter who becomes a reluctant intern.

The first series earned an impressive 80% score from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes, and a respectable 67% from critics.

Despite the glowing reviews and landing of a second series, it seems to have passed quite a few people by.

Selyonce admitted she ‘didn’t know this show existed’ on X before stumbling across it.

Created by Victor Fresco, who is also behind Santa Clarita Diet and Better Off Ted, the people who have discovered it have praised it for its hilarity and strong cast.

‘Just finished re-watching the first season of #Unstable on #Netflix, in preparation for Season 2 this week,’ wrote Jim Wingert. ‘@RobLowe and #JohnOwenLowe are hilarious as father & son. The cast is great, and #FredArmisen is a scene-stealer.’

Multiple Reddit platforms have also been set up to spread the word of its excellence.

‘I urge everyone to check out Netflix’s Unstable,’ wrote contributor Mackenziethrowaway.

Muppethero80 added: ‘This show is like parks and rec meets better of Ted. And I love it so much.’

It wasn’t just the funny moments that were praised, others felt represented by the characters.

‘I found a lot of similarities between me and the characters and I appreciate that. I also struggled with representation. It felt like everybody had a sprinkling of neurodivergent rather than actually being represented accurately as a full neurodivergent person,’ shared FoxJ.

Bookworm59 expanded: ‘The relationships between them were pretty wholesome and vulnerable and honest and everyone was a little weird in their own way and I really enjoyed it.’

The second series will see Ellis present Jackson with challenges to test if he’s got what it takes to be the heir to his company, which continues to face trouble.
