Malik Taylor emerging as Jets receiver surprise at training camp as targets pile up

Observations from Jets training camp on Tuesday:

Target Rich

Between his reps with starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers and backup Tyrod Taylor, Malik Taylor is the most-targeted receiver in many practices.

The former Packers‘ knowledge of the playbook is showing, as he takes advantage of the injury absences of first-teamers Mike Williams and Xavier Gipson.

“He’s a guy that’s starting to win his one-on-ones and putting himself in position to create separation,” coach Robert Saleh said, “so very pleased with where he’s at right now.”

Snap Out Of It

Center Joe Tippman had at least two off-target snaps, continuing a weeklong trend of shakiness.

At one point late in practice, offensive line coach Keith Carter called for backup center Wes Schweitzer to hustle down the sideline for a quick chat. It makes you wonder if Schweitzer will soon get a look.

Caught My Eye

Jets owner Woody Johnson was on the sideline for practice, spotted for the first time this training camp. He spent most of his time standing with and talking to general manager Joe Douglas.

Rodgers Report

Rodgers completed 10 of 19 passes in team periods and one of three passes in seven-on-seven on an ugly day for the offense.

He did not throw a touchdown on any of the five 11-on-11 series that he directed, with the two move-the-ball drills and a 52-second drill all resulting in a turnover on downs.

The hurry-up drill ended with four straight incompletions (including a spike).

He also tossed a ball to Breece Hall that wound up mishandled and was recovered by defensive end Micheal Clemons.

Injury Report

Undrafted rookie Tyler Harrell left practice early with an unspecified injury.

DL Takkarist McKinley did not practice. RT Morgan Moses should join team drills “in the next couple days,” Saleh said.
