Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff is finally addressing the life-changing crash that he survived in 2022 while filming Top Gear.
The beloved TV presenter and ex England Cricketer posted a trailer on Tuesday for an upcoming BBC series (his first social media post since 2022) called Freddie Flintoff’s Field Of Dreams.
In the trailer, Freddie discusses the horrific high-speed crash he endured at Top Gear’s test track, Dunsfold Aerodrome, in December 2022, leaving the 46-year-old seriously injured.
Since the accident, Flintoff has remained largely silent about the ordeal. However, he has gradually re-emerged in the public eye over the past year.
In March, the BBC confirmed Flintoff’s return for the new series.
A trailer for the forthcoming four-part series teases Flintoff’s first in-depth discussion about the crash. In the trailer, he remarks: ‘Something happened that’s changed my life forever,’ as the camera focuses on his face and the visible scars from his injuries.
Following this, a narrator adds: ‘This is the story of the most unlikely cricket tour that almost didn’t happen.’
The series is a sequel to the 2022 series where Flintoff transformed a group of unassuming teenagers from his hometown, Preston, Lancashire, into a cricket team.
The new series will follow the team’s journey as they embark on a tour of India.
In November, the BBC announced that Top Gear would be on hiatus for the ‘foreseeable future’ due to Flintoff’s accident.
The former England cricket captain received a financial settlement from the broadcaster as part of the fallout from the incident.
At the time, he had been driving an open-topped car going at 130mph when it flipped and slid along the track, and Freddie had to be airlifted to hospital.
It was reported that Freddie was ‘lucky to be alive’ after the severe crash, and has since stepped out of the spotlight – until now.
The original press release for the four-part series teased: ‘Freddie is setting himself an even bigger challenge as he takes some of his team and a handful of fresh recruits on a new adventure.’
Freddie said when show was originally announced: ‘Working with the boys was one of the most incredible experiences of my life but the work is not finished yet! I’m really pleased we’ll be continuing the hard work we have all put in, but on a much bigger scale.’
Freddie, who began hosting Top Gear in 2019, will add the new show to his already impressive television resume, which includes appearances on Sky’s A League Of Their Own and winning the first series of the Australian version of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!
