Three years after the twisties took her out of contention for most events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Simone Biles is back and looking “unstoppable.”
The seven-time medalist headlines a five-person gymnastics squad that also includes three more members of the 2020 team: Jordan Chiles, reigning floor exercise gold medalist Jade Carey, and reigning all-around champ Sunisa Lee. They’re joined by first-time Olympian Hezly Rivera, a 16-year old from New Jersey who is Team USA’s youngest competitor.

We won’t know which members of the team will compete on which apparatuses in the team final or who will compete for all-around and in the individual finals until after a qualification round.
Following the qualifiers, the top eight teams will move onto the team final, while the top 24 all-around entrants will compete in the all-around final (max two per delegation). The top eight gymnasts in each apparatus will qualify for the individual finals later this week.
In the qualifiers today, Team USA will start on balance beam, then rotate through floor exercise, vault, and uneven bars. Per the official Olympic report, here’s who Team USA is submitting in each apparatus:
- Balance beam: Chiles, Rivera, Lee, Biles
- Floor exercise: Lee, Chiles, Carey, Biles
- Vault: Lee, Chiles (2), Carey (2), Biles (2)
- Uneven bars: Rivera, Chiles, Biles, Lee
As they’re participating in all four today, Biles, Chiles, and Lee are in contention to qualify for the all-around final.
