Four dead after collision between semi, SUV near Strathmore

Grain truck slams into SUV that rolled through stop sign while making a turn, say Alberta RCMP

Four people are dead after an SUV and semi-truck crashed Friday morning at an intersection in Strathmore.

Strathmore RCMP were called at 10 a.m. Friday to an intersection near the town east of Calgary after receiving reports of a serious motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 564.

Emergency crews arrived to find a semi-truck hauling a grain trailer and a small SUV had collided at the intersection before both vehicles ended up in a ditch.

RCMP said in a statement that it appears the semi-truck, which had been travelling south on Highway 9, collided with the SUV after it rolled from the stop sign while executing a northbound turn. Police remain early in the investigation, RCMP noted.

The male driver of the semi, who is 68 years old, escaped from the truck before it caught fire, police said. He sustained minor injuries and was assessed by EMS at the scene.

The four SUV occupants were found dead at the scene. They were a 62-year-old woman from Calgary, a 38-year-old man from Calgary, and an adult male and female in their early 60s from the Philippines.

As of Friday evening after 7 p.m., police continued to investigate with a collision reconstructionist, though traffic has returned to the area after being redirected earlier in the day.
