Who:Wyatt C. Louis
When, where: Saturday, July 27 at 10:30 a.m. on the Altitude Communications Stage at Prince’s Island Park.
Currently residing in Red Deer, Wyatt C. Louis had already been established as a favourite in the Calgary music scene and on the stages of the Calgary Folk Fest long before they put out their debut album earlier this year. Chandler, which is also the Plains-Cree songwriter’s middle name, further cemented their reputation for penning personal songs that mixed folk and their Indigenous culture.
Who: Kue Varo and the Only Hopes
When, Where: Saturday, July 27 at 11:55 a.m. on the Horizon Heating stage 1 at Prince’s Island Park.
Witchcraft Cowboy was one of my favourite records of 2023 and the Calgary band has proven itself to be an exciting live act as well, with acclaimed performances at the Soundoff Summit, Block Heater and Sled Island. Led by Nanton-born Kue Varo, the band’s debut moves from strength to strength with memorable hooks and an understated virtuosity for various shades of rock and guitar-pop.
Who: K-Riz
When, Where: Sunday, July 28, 11:55 a.m. on Horizone Heating Stage 1 at Prince’s Island Park.
A recent transplant to Calgary, rapper K-Riz is one of the more exciting performers on the ever-growing Alberta hip-hop scene. An expert rapper, he is also a powerful singer who has released two full-length records in the past four years, including last year’s One Way Ticket.
Who: Booker T. Presents: A Stax Revue
When, where: Sunday, July 28 on the Main Stage at 8:55 p.m. at Prince’s Island Park.
Booker T. Jones and his Stax Revue should end things on a high note Sunday as the final main-stage performer. The icon is often credited with setting the template for modern soul music in Memphis with Stax hits such as Green Onions and Melting Pot. But the revue also promises to pay tribute to his former label-mates such as Otis Redding and Sam and Dave.
